Damaged Rear Window - Repair or Replacement?
A damaged rear window is not only a safety risk, it can also lead to costly consequential damage. Unlike windscreens, rear windows are usually made of toughened safety glass (ESG), which often has to be replaced completely when damaged. Here you'll learn all about repair options and when a replacement is unavoidable.
What Makes the Rear Window Special
Rear windows are made of toughened safety glass, which breaks into small cubes when damaged. Many modern vehicles have heating elements or antennas built into the glass.
Special care is needed with damage to rear windows with heating wires. Damaged heating wires can put the entire rear window heating out of action.
When Is a Replacement Necessary?
In most cases a complete rear window replacement is unavoidable, because toughened (ESG) glass cannot be repaired. The exceptions are very small surface damage with no penetration. With cracks, holes or fractures, the entire pane has to be replaced. Damaged heating wires usually also require a complete replacement.
The Professional Replacement Process
Our specialist team first carefully removes the damaged rear window and all adhesive residue. The new rear window is fitted with a special structural adhesive that ensures optimal strength and sealing. For glass with heating elements, all electrical connections are professionally connected and tested.
Costs and Process
The cost of a rear window replacement varies by vehicle model and equipment. Rear windows with heating or special functions take more effort to replace. The work usually takes 2-3 hours. We also offer a practical pick-up and drop-off service for your convenience.
How Much Does It Cost to Replace a Rear Window?
A rear window replacement usually costs between €200 and €600, depending on the vehicle and equipment. Rear windows with heating, an antenna or tinted glass tend to be at the upper end. With partial casco insurance (Teilkasko) you normally only pay your excess – we bill your insurer directly.
Does Teilkasko Pay for the Rear Window?
Yes. Glass breakage is insured under partial casco (Teilkasko) – including the rear window. You only pay the agreed excess, and your no-claims bonus is not affected. Without casco insurance you bear the costs yourself; third-party liability insurance does not pay for damage to your own car.
Rear Window Smashed – What to Do?
If the rear window has been smashed or shattered, do not remove loose glass splinters with your bare hands, and protect the interior from rain, for example with plastic film. Take photos of the damage and report it to your insurer – and in the case of a break-in or vandalism, to the police as well. Then call us: our mobile service comes to you nationwide and replaces the glass on site.
Rear Window Heating Faulty – Repair or Replace?
If only a single heating wire is broken, it can often be repaired with a special conductive paint. If the heating no longer works over a large area or the glass is damaged, the rear window must be replaced. We check this for you and give you honest advice on what makes sense.
