Side Windows: Safety and Comfort
Side windows are far more than transparent barriers between inside and outside. They play a decisive role in vehicle safety, comfort and even the structural integrity of the whole vehicle. Modern side windows combine advanced technology with the highest safety standards.
Toughened Safety Glass (ESG) - The Standard
Most side windows are made of toughened safety glass (ESG), which breaks into small, blunt cubes. This minimises the risk of injury and allows a quick escape in an emergency.
ESG is about five times stronger than ordinary glass and withstands large temperature changes. Thermal toughening makes it especially resistant to impacts and vibrations.
Modern Features and Equipment
Today's side windows offer far more than a view through. Many have UV protection that blocks up to 99% of harmful UV radiation. Tinted glass reduces glare and heat build-up inside the vehicle. Some premium vehicles have electrochromic glass that can change its tint electronically.
Repair vs. Replacement
Unlike windscreens, repairs to side windows are usually not possible. Because of the ESG structure, even small damage often causes the whole pane to shatter. A quick replacement is then unavoidable. Professional fitting ensures a perfect fit and optimal sealing.
Important Safety Aspects
Side windows contribute to the structural stability of the vehicle, especially in side-impact crashes. Damaged or incorrectly fitted side windows can impair the effectiveness of airbags. Use only original or equivalent replacement glass with the appropriate test marks for maximum safety.
